I have spent most of my career inside large, complex systems. Over the years, I’ve seen what successful platform projects have in common — and what gradually gets systems into trouble, and how to pull them out again.

What I learned is simple: the real problems usually come from architecture decisions that made sense at the time but later created structural risk.

Every architecture decision is a trade-off. Assumptions are made to reduce complexity, cost, or time. But environments change, systems grow, and assumptions that once looked solid can become wrong.

The art of architecture is not to avoid trade-offs — it is to make the right ones, and to design systems so that when assumptions change, the cost of adapting remains manageable.
